The KXR Framework: Instructional Design for Transformative and Accessible Extended Reality Learning

The KonnectXR (KXR) Instructional Design Framework offers a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to designing transformative and accessible Extended Reality (XR)-based training programs. The framework, an outcome of a National Science Foundation-funded initiative, supports immersive, outcome-driven learning. It achieves this by integrating andragogical principles with established instructional models such as Backward Design and ADDIE. It aligns XR’s unique affordances across 360-degree media, AR, MR, and VR with adult learning theories, including Situated, Experiential, and Collaborative Learning. The framework also centers accessibility throughout the design and development process by incorporating the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). The KXR Framework offers practical platform-agnostic guidance for aligning technology, pedagogy, and curriculum design to support accessibility, engagement, and real-world skills development, while remaining broadly applicable across a wide range of disciplines.
